I wasn’t a particularly good student in middle school or early high school. My parents are academics: they valued education over most things. They graduated from prestigious colleges with advanced degrees and taught at a high level. It drove them crazy to have a kid with mediocre grades. I just couldn’t focus on school, no matter how hard I tried. I was grounded most of the time during those years.
